It's In The Bag!

We serve over 600 sandwiches a day at our shelter in downtown Dallas. Instead of a plain brown bag, how much cooler to receive a decorated bag with an encouraging word written on it? A great project for groups of all ages and can be done anywhere.

The project is simple! Buy some lunch bags (Walmart has 100 brown bags for $2). Have the volunteers decorate the bags with crayons, rubber stamps, markers, colored pencils, crayons and/or stickers and then have them hand write an inspirational quote or scripture verse on the bag. We ask that the volunteer does not provide any contact information but they are welcomed to sign the bag with their first name if they wish.  You may request a list of suggested quotes by emailing Any quote may be used as long as it is inspiring or encouraging.

Some statistics on hunger in our area:

  • Our Command, which is set up similar to a school district, serves 5 counties: Dallas, Denton, Collin, Tarrant and Ellis
  • Meals served last year in our area: 1.1 Million Meals served
  • Sandwiches given each day at our Dallas Shelter: 600 each day
