Since starting its operation six years ago, the Metro Relief Bus has become a consistent source of aid for the homeless community, providing essential support to help people get off the streets. We retrofit school buses into mobile outreach centers designed to go directly to those in our community who are most vulnerable, lonely, and hurt. Week after week, rain or shine, the Metro Relief Bus meets homeless people right on sidewalks, under bridges and outside of shelters with one simple message: “We love you. You are not alone. Tomorrow can be better than today.” We provide meals, new socks, toiletries, and connections to community resources on each of our inner city outreaches. In 2016 alone, over 18,000 points of contact were made with homeless individuals, all with the goal to offer hope and a way out.
Volunteers on our Thursday, Friday, and Saturday outreaches start their volunteer experiences at our headquarters in The Colony, TX. Before helping load the Metro Relief Bus with supplies for the day, volunteers assist in making the soup and beverages that will be served to the homeless. Once the bus is outfitted with everything needed, staff and volunteers head for either downtown Dallas or Ft. Worth. Orientation and instruction take place on the trip into town. Each volunteer will have the opportunity to help serve soup from the bus' foldout food counter and to distribute new pairs of socks and hygiene kits to the people we meet in the inner city. Metro Relief staff is responsible for providing any social work support necessary.
